Week 5 with your Dog (Last Good Puppy and Good Doggo Class)

Exercises

 Excited Greetings

Video (newest): https://youtu.be/MTNl3lbkTIYVideo: https://youtu.be/UuI_MWmuoHY

Teach your dog to do a defulat sit without asking as they are approaching you at a fast rate. Also, great way to start teaching yoru dog to defalt sit in front of you with a "come".

Stay Search Game

Videos:

https://youtu.be/TY0iqbTcsV4

https://youtu.be/YJWbrsMBRz8

The goal of this exercise is to start a fun nose work game while building the duration of stay.  Dogs' self-control improves.

Steps

• Cue stay on dog's mat.

• Place a treat on the floor and let dog see you cover the treat with an object your dog can pick-up, tip over, etc.

• Cue their release word and "find-it" or "search" or "hunt".

• This week practice stays with different objects one at a time.

Note: if your dog moves from the stay, it is important that they see you remove the item and treat so they associate the removal of what they want with the get up before a release.

Leave-It Duration

Video: https://youtu.be/xGuhvlUkrbY

This week, build duration of the leave-it. As dog looks at an item say leave-it before dog moves toward the objects. Reward the leave-it. Now when dog looks back, repeat. It is important that your dog learns to leave-it even after the treat.

Teach Drop

Videos:

https://youtu.be/JquZtVhmVk8

https://youtu.be/j4kCZor3f1Y

Frequently in class dogs do not care about toys so below are some tips. The tips are a bit different then the video as well so you have other options to practice.

Step 1: Teach a signal and the Word

When dog has an item they are allowed, raise hand and show a treat in your pointer and them vingers pressed together. As item drops from dogs mouth add the word drop. Take the item, give a treat and give item back.

Step 2: Say Drop and Reward

Step 3: Place items they can't have but it isn't the word thing in the word around and set them up to drop.

Remember for drop it is super important that you don't chase. If it doesn't work see if they will chase you to the food cabinet.

Trick Around:

Around Video:  Trick Around - YouTube

New Video: https://youtu.be/ECEh5hqPP20

  • Use a hand signal to initiate the trick.
  •  With your dog standing, place a familiar target in front of him to encourage a nose touch. As your dog moves towards the target to touch with his nose, slowly pull the target around your body.
  • Mark and treat.
  • Repeat the process several times so your dog is comfortable following your hand target.

Trick Peak-a-Boo:

Peek-a-Boo Video:    Trick Peek a Boo - YouTube

New Video: https://youtu.be/xLcTCUwHAZM

  • With your dog standing, place a familiar target in front of him to encourage a nose touch. As your dog moves towards the target to touch with his nose, gently pull the target toward your legs so he needs to take a step toward to touch it.
  • Mark and drop the treat between your legs or under so your dog needs to run under your legs to retrieve the treat.
  • Note: Some dogs are nervous of moving under your legs so go slowly.
  • Repeat the process several times so your dog is comfortable going under your leg's forwards and backwards.
  • Begin using your hand target so your dog follows from your front side to around your backside.
  • Use both hands as targets with treats in the front target hand.
  • As your dog is following one hand target behind you, reach between your legs and have your dog follow your treat hand target through your legs.
  • Repeat and practice a few times.
  • Next, instead of your dog following through your legs from behind, lure your dog's nose up toward your belly button as their head comes through your legs.
  • Treat Treat Treat to keep in place.
  • Repeat!
  • Next add the word Peek-a-Boo as targeting around and repeat.
  • Next add Peek-a-Boo before the hand target.

Outdoor Obstacles

Adding it Together (udner construction)

Pieces added together from my classes at least:

  • Velcro dog      (starts to phase out with each step)
  • Hand      targeting (starts to phase out with each step)
  • Eye contact      (starts to phase out with each step)
  • Casual walk

Mini exercises added together as necessary:

  • Impulse      exercise – food on floor
  • Stay
  • Come
  • Leash Pressure

So the exercise:

Step 1: Velcro dog

  • Walk with the      velcro dog down a path
  • End of path      cue dog to stay
  • Place treat      on ground
  • Recall away      from treat (lure back into velcro dog as needed)
  • Go back to starting      point
  • Velcro dog      walk all the way to treat and cue dog to go get-it

*If dog pulls out to get the treat at any point, apply leash pressure as needed and cue to let’s go and head back to starting point and re-start

Step 2: Hand target

All the steps above only this time food only comes out after dog hand targets your hand.

Step 3: Eye contact

All the steps above only this time dog is walking nice with you and checking-in

Step 4: Casual

All the steps above only this time dog is just walking nice all the way through. Eye contact isn’t necessary. Dog just enjoys staying at your side without treats, etc.
