Door boundaries including fence gate

If your dog is excited at a door; always start non-verbal so they don’t practice moving after you cue stay.  Use the door as the tool.

Car Door: https://youtu.be/bSeMoOac8NU

Use the target mat as a foundation place Place mat on the floor and reward your dog for offering to move to the mat and sit or lay down Mark and reward on mat Using a door with a doorknob, reach toward door Mark for not moving from mat and reward on mat Wiggle doorknob or knock Mark for not moving toward and reward on mat Open door slightly Mark for not moving toward open door and reward on mat Open door a little more Mark for not moving toward open door and reward on mat  Gradually increase the width the door is open Release your dog to come forward to you to check-it-out (finale  reward) When dog is successful, start to add the verbal cue “stay” or “wait”  Troubleshoot: If at any point dog moves from mat or toward door,  simply close door and reset. Do not pull dog back, have dog follow  your hand target. Say good but do not reward. Start again.

The Tease

Video: https://youtu.be/Fz_lT5dvOcA

Use treats, hands, toys, scarfs; anything that will tease your puppy.

  • Start lowering the item in a boring fashion.
  • *Take away if your puppy raises from feet.
  • *Give a treat if your puppy remains sitting, standing or in a down position.
  • Make it more challenging when puppy is successful. Puppy moving towards you. You move towards puppy out of the blue. You tease more.

Note: if your puppy is not successful, make it easier. It is important the four on the floor is practice more than two feet up.

  • Then practice coming in through the door, etc.

Intro Leave-It

Video: https://youtu.be/7VCLBOQ4UFw

Overview video: https://youtu.be/Vn1PhJiCQCU

Leave-it is a great skill to prevent your dog from grabbing dangerous items. I suggest training leave-it as if it is dangerous and there is never a release to get the item.   Show an item to your dog your dog can't have If your dog goes for the item, raise it and start again *Don't put the item right in their face.  Once your dog pauses and does not move toward the item, mark and reward out of the other hand Now move the item around and repeat always marking no movement and rewarding from the opposite hand After 10 successes and rewards in a row add the word "Leave-It" as you are presenting item.

Distraction Recall

https://youtu.be/5l3OwP-vivo

Dogs that do not come from distractions need to learn to come and practice coming to more fun or something better.

With 2 people:

  • 1 person is the distractor (hold kibble at dogs mouth)
  • 2 person is the recaller (better and more treats)
  • If dog's recall is not good do not start 10 feet away start by standing right next to dog.
  • Say name or recall or both in a happy high-pitched tone and if dog looks at you add happy praise and draw dog away from distractor with your voice, clapping anything exciting.
  • Then drop reward on ground in front of you and have puppy party!
  • *If dog does not look at you after name and recall word once then stick treats in front of nose and draw away doing the same thing
  • Increase without a lure and distance after a number or successes.
  • Once you can say name and recall word from lets say 20 or 30 feet now add more distraction such as the distractor person letting dog lick treat. Know you will probably need to briefly start over closer to dog again.

With one person using something like a snuffle mat or you could use behind a fence. Video with snufflemat:  (27) Distraction Recall - YouTube

Excited Sit or Down

Tease with a toy then ask fo a sit or down, reward with toy

Crazy behavior makes the toy go away

Drop

Play tug

go boring and hold as much of teh toy as possible

Add word drop or release as toy comes out of mouth

Resource guard prevention

Key is you are safe.

Toss extra stuff into bowl

Deliver extra to the bowl

Video to come with what we covered in class

Trade valuables

Remember do not over take or practice all the time. Non-stop practice can create a resource guarder. Do you always want someone that takes food from your plate?

Stay - Adding challenges

Pass your Puppy

Practice other walking your dog toward other people (helpers) and have your helper tease your dog and reward for non-jumping

Target Walk

Videos:

https://youtu.be/PIdfTXTHksU

Cue your dog to your side and reward for taping your hand target

Take a step and as you do place hand down at your side and cue your word to follow then treat the boop of your hand target

Continue hand target and treat

As dog is reliably staying at your side begin stretching out time between boops of the hand target

*Use to help dog by distraction's as well

Tip: If dog is highly distracted; give dog a distraction on the ground

Tip: Start inside, then the backyard, front yard, down driveway, to the mailbox, etc.

Stay in New Locations + Come

Cue your dog to stay in a new location or boundary location

Add distance toward a new spot (if your dog gets up, take dog back to the same location and they loose the treat)

Go back and reward dog for staying and repeat

At the end recall dog to your new spot, reward and repeat at the new location

Come Pattern

Videos:

https://youtu.be/TDvCYZ_sVbw

https://youtu.be/85Xs-uP-SoA

Give your dog a treat and move away from your dog rapidly. As your dog begins to move toward you; say "come" in a happy happy voice and reward. Toss the treat and run away from your dog. Have fun!

 Leave-It-More practice

Video: https://youtu.be/7VCLBOQ4UFw

Show an item of interest and as you present cue leave-it

Mark the back away or no movement towards and treat
