Orientation Week Exercises (Feed meals for canine enrichment

If choose to use a marker: Load the Marker: Clicker or happy tone "yes" "yip" etc.

  • Video Link: https://youtu.be/8lr3vcVPV-4
  • In a quiet room make your mark noise and treat immediately (1 to 3 seconds after mark)

                             Make it 2 distinct actions

                             Mark then the treat appears

  • Repeat 10 times
  • Next Toss food saying "find-it"
  • Mark as your dog turns toward you or as dog is moving toward you
  • Toss food again saying "find-it"
  • Repeat 10 times

Create a Target Spot

Feed your dog once or more times a day this week on the target spot and bring it with you to class. We are creating excitement for the spot. Use a new mat, blanket, elevated cot, etc. Something you think your dog will like laying upon.

  • Feed your dog on the spot
  • First session your dog does not know what you are doing
  • Show the target spot, toss it onto the ground so your dog is moving toward the spot
  • Show food and begin placing food onto the target spot so your dog moves all four feet onto the item
  • Place more pieces of food onto the target spot to keep do there
  • Toss one piece off or signal for dog to follow you off
  • Move target spot to a different location and repeat
  • Your dog is understanding the game when you place the spot down and your dog moves to the spot and looks at you wait for the food to come
  • When your dog is successful, pause and wait for your dog to offer a new behavior such as a sit or down. Offering is the key!

Catch a Behavior (Sit)s and Downs

Walk around your home and pause; when your dog offers to sit or laydown, reward. Practice this week as much as possible. The key is to wait for the offered behavior, do not ask. (Tip: hold treats at your belly button with hands clasped. (If your dog jumps walk away and try again.)

  • Toss a treat and say "find-it"
  • Pause as dog approaches and look at the ground
  • As your dog's behind is touching the ground mark and toss a treat saying "find-it"
  • Repeat 10 times

Even if your dog knows the word sit this is a fun exercise to catch behaviors offered. It is a great way to teach down as well. Catch a down (behind and elbows on the ground).

Catching eye Contact

This week, keep your dog's kibble or treats in your pocket. Throughout the day, every time you see your dog check-in and look at you mark with your mark noise and give a treat.

  • Video Link: https://youtu.be/MpQHvM6S8NE
  • Mark your dog for looking at you from a distance and treat
  • Mark your dog for walking to you and looking at you and treat

Catching Relaxation

Station food around the house or carry kibble in a pocket. Whenever you see your dog relaxed place a piece of kibble down between their paws and walk away. You could add a word if you want like good calm then walk away. Ignore your dog in the beginning if he/she comes for more. They will start to realize treats appear for calmness offered everywhere.

Gotcha

Gotcha is useful for a number of reasons. To keep your dog coming toward you when you out stretch your hand vs backing away. A great handling skill so dogs are not uncomfortable with the grab of a collar or harness. Alto teaching puppies to come away when needed.

Video Link: https://youtu.be/jSlXHJTkWzg

  • Test your dog first to make sure they are comfortable with your hand near their collar. If not show treat and place hand at a comfortable distance for your dog then remove.
  • Once dog is comfortable:
  • Show treat, reach, grab while saying gotcha, release collar
  • When dog is enjoying the exercise, reach, grab while saying gotcha then give the treat
  • Next, reach, grab, take away gently then give the treat

Let's Go: Horizontal Leash Pressure

Teach your dog to move with you and away from a distraction. The leash is frequently used too much as a way to move dogs. The leash isn't meant to be used to drag dogs, jerk dogs, etc., but instead as a safety measure so dogs cannot roam too far. This exercise teaches your dog to move into a specific direction when horizonal leash pressure (not a pull) is applied. Then use your happy voice to praise and reward your dog.

Video Link: https://youtu.be/CNn732a_nB4

  • With dog in front of you, put horizontal pressure on the leash into the direction you want your dog to go
  • Mark the moment your dog's head turns into that direction and treat
  • Next: Place an object of interest in the room and with your dog on leash apply slight gradual pressure horizontally on the leash.
  • Mark the head turn toward you, turn and say, "let's go" and give the treat
  • Goal would be to transfer the exercise outside
